This is the long suffering website of Chris Keene. I’m based in Brighton, UK. nostuff.org has been my home on the web since around 2002.
I’ve been running wordpress on this site since 2005. It’s moved hosts and setups several times, normally in such a rush that I somehow managed to break just about all the links, and on a bad day broke all the images too. It also seems to have been hacked at least once with random spam links added in various places.
I decided that as this is more or less static, a much better option would be a static site generator, producing no-frills html pages. Less to go wrong. Less to be attacked.
Hugo CMS seemed like a good fit, and I went with that. I found the documentation a litte challenging in parts, not always clear how to do certain things, but here we are.
The final question is why. The idea of the web was that web pages on different webservers could all link together to create a rich information landscape. And future reference. When I managed the website for part of a University, I had the 404 page log each request it served, the page they were trying to access, and the external page that linked there, in the hope to at least plumb the gap when there was enough demand to warrant it. That idea seems to have passeed somewhat, sites come and go with little left to evidence their existence. So while this site has never had much to offer - it has NO STUFF - it is mine, and what was once here is (mostly) still. Until I stop paying the bills.
